The temperature was still quite comfortable at just over 70 degrees Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. But all it took was one Arizona State player to turn up the desert heat and scorch the Dirtbags of Long Beach State. Eric Sogard went 4 for 4, and three times gave the No. 11-ranked Sun Devils (13-5) the lead, including a two-run home run in the eighth to lead ASU to a 7-6 victory in the series opener. The Dirtbags had a chance to tie or take the lead in the ninth, putting two runners on. With two outs, LBSU walked twice to set up a potential tying situation, but an unusual single by Brandon Godfrey ended up spelling the end to the Dirtbags’ night. center_img Godfrey blooped a short single to the right of the mound. LBSU’s two base runners were stuck at third in limbo for the final out on a throw across the diamond. LBSU took leads in the fourth and seventh innings but were foiled by Sogard. Sogard’s finished the day 4-for-4 with four RBI, adding a solo home run in the first and an RBI single in the fourth. The series continues at noon today and 1 p.m. Sunday. last_img read more
