Worker buried in trench rescued

first_imgNORTH HOLLYWOOD – Firefighters rescued a construction worker Wednesday who was trapped in dirt up to his chest in a deep trench for almost two hours, authorities said. The 40-year-old worker and a colleague became trapped in the 15-foot-deep trench at a construction site at 11000 Oxnard St. near Vineland Avenue about 3:07 p.m. His colleague was removed shortly after becoming trapped. Both were in fair condition at local hospitals. “It was terrifying just to look at,” said Greg West, Los Angeles Fire Department assistant chief. West said about 70 firefighters responded to the call, including members of the department’s Urban Search and Rescue team who are trained for trench rescues. The team used plywood and other material to shore up and stabilize the dirt surrounding the man while using a Department of Sanitation diesel-powered vacuum truck to suck out tons of dirt. “That dirt caves in, it puts pressure on his chest so it makes breathing difficult,” West said, explaining why the man might have been seen flailing his arms trying to scoop dirt away from himself. The trapped worker was given an oxygen mask and a hard hat and spoke with firefighters throughout the tense ordeal, West said. Los Angeles Police Department officers, responding to what proved to be an erroneous call about an assault with a deadly weapon involving men with shovels, were the first emergency workers on scene. The workers with shovels “were obviously trying to help their buddy out,” said Officer Matt Ethridge, one of the first to arrive. Ethridge said he saw about a half-dozen workers scooping dirt out of the hole using a rope with a bucket tied to the end. He said he and five other officers used the rope to pull the man’s colleague out of the hole. Firefighters arrived on scene shortly afterward. The first man rescued was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. The second man was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. The workers were digging holes for footings and had used a backhoe earlier in the day, officials said. A Weed Is a Nice Plant at the Wrong Party

first_imgHow do weeds go wild?  That is a question investigated by Science Now on Feb. 20.1  A complex relationship between a plant and its microbial partners may keep it in check.  Transplant that species to an unfamiliar territory, and it may go out of control because it no longer has its restraining pathogens, or “natural enemies” (if that metaphor is useful: see 07/03/2003 entry).  Experiments on knapweed have shown two processes at work:Enemies clearly matter, and that’s especially true in the old country.  When the researchers grew knapweed in French soil, it fared better in soil that had been previously planted with bunchgrass than with knapweed–presumably because the bunchgrass soil had not accumulated knapweed-specific pathogens.  But it appears that enemies aren’t the whole story.  Montana soil showed the opposite pattern: Knapweed planted in soil that had grown knapweed did better there than in once-grassy soil, the team reports in the 19 February issue of Nature.  They think that invasive knapweed has not only escaped its natural pathogens in Montana but is modifying the soil to its own advantage, perhaps by cultivating helpful mycorrhizal fungi.“This suggests that the contribution of soil organisms in invasiveness is two-fold: [Invasives] escape from the bad guys and [get] help from the good guys,” notes Wim Van der Putten of the Centre for Terrestrial Ecology in Heteren, The Netherlands.1Erik Skogstad, “How Weeds Go Wild,” Science Now Feb 20, 2004.The article starts with the language of warfare, but is it misleading?It may not make great action footage for nature documentaries, but plants are in constant battle with each other–for space, light, water–and with soil pathogens that threaten to kill or stunt them.  Now it’s becoming clear just how important this subterranean struggle can be.  Plants that escape their natural soil-borne enemies, and strike up alliances with friendly microbes, can become aggressive invaders.This Malthusian, dog-eat-dog imagery may be opposite the truth (see 07/04/2003 entry.)  If the plants and their soil organisms are in a balance of growth and regulation, that can be a picture a peaceful homeostasis just as much as the regulation that goes on inside a single cell: agonist and antagonist, on-switch and off-switch, accelerator and brake.    Imagine instead a post-Fall and post-Flood world.  After a worldwide flood and ice age, the ecology was radically changed with continents having drifted apart and land bridges vanished under rising seas.  New groups of organisms, now isolated from one another, settled into new levels of mutual regulation suitable for their climate.  The more isolated the environments became, the more “damage” an invasive species could cause.  Increasing human migrations accelerated the upsets to ecologies that had become established over thousands of years (e.g., the importation of tumbleweeds to the western United States by Russian immigrants, Dutch elm disease, etc.).  An original worldwide balance in nature was replaced by islands, each balanced internally, but out of balance with each other.    All human investigators have the same data available for study.  Darwinian struggle, Biblical paradise lost – your metaphor will affect how you look at the data, and what questions you will find interesting.(Visited 9 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

For five weeks in a row. You are only going to be notified when your client has overpaid tens of thousands of dollars, and only when the problem is large enough to make them question your integrity. There is no reason to rip into anyone for making a mistake. The only thing for you to do is to make sure it is corrected, and ensure that if the problem is systemic, that someone does something to put a new process in place.I promise you are going to have unreasonable clients, ones with unreasonable expectations who don’t pick up their end of the stick, and who are just difficult personalities. Almost none of their vitriol or hostility has anything to do with you. They didn’t sleep well. They are dehydrated. They have low blood sugar. They have an overdue bill they are having trouble paying. They have an elderly parent they are trying to take care of, and they are under stress taking care of their own family. All you can do is give them your very best effort to take care of them.Take problems seriously, but not personally. These challenges don’t define you, even when you created the problem or challenge. How you respond is what defines you. Are you positive, empowered, optimistic, and future-oriented? The One Way to Protect Yourself When You Lose a Major Account

first_imgYou have existing clients that need your time and attention. You also need to prospect. Your current clients need things now, and you need to communicate with them to help them—and retain them. Because they have needs you need to address now, you neglect prospecting and creating new opportunities. You may not pay the penalty for having not prospected until some time in the future, but eventually, know for sure that you will indeed pay. At some point, you will lose a very large client that generates an equally large portion of your revenue and most of your compensation. When this awful event occurs, you will be twelve to eighteen months behind acquiring a replacement.You Lost a Large ClientYou acquired your dream client years ago, and you have faithfully served them, taking care of their needs. You have deep relationships with the people who work there, and there is no hint of anything going wrong. One day, the company is acquired by a larger company that has a contractual relationship with your competitor. Or a new stakeholder decides to make a name for themselves by removing a supplier and bringing in the team they used to work with at their last job. Whatever the reason, you lost your largest account.Because you have not been prospecting, you have exposed yourself to the risk of not having a strong pipeline, the only thing that can inoculate you from losing the revenue and compensation when you lose a large client. You are now so far behind on prospecting and creating opportunities that you are some many months away from replacing your major account. The time to have created new opportunities was while you had your dream client up and running. How many months behind are you when it comes to winning a new major account?How Many Months BehindLarge clients don’t tend to change suppliers often. They tend to find a partner who will take care of them, and they live with some amount of errors and unfulfilled needs. Because these relationships are strategic, these large clients live with some problems and find ways to work around others. In short, they are not highly compelled to change. They are even less interested in switching only to end up with the same set of problems they already experience—or new challenges that might disrupt their business.A normal distribution curve would show you that there are fewer of these larger clients, and they wouldn’t be large targets for you if they weren’t already spending significantly on what you sell. To win a new large client, you are going to have to displace a competitor from a relatively small number of targets, a meager percentage of whom will change in a given year.During the time you were not calling on these prospective clients, your competitors were nurturing relationships, sharing insights and ideas, and scheduling meetings. The people who will decide to select a new partner when it is necessary to have your competitor’s business cards, and they are familiar enough with them to know whom they like and whom they won’t consider. You, however, are a complete unknown, making it unlikely you even get a call to compete.My guess is you are eighteen months away from winning your dream client. Even though you may be able to find a few dream clients who explore change, you aren’t likely lucky enough to win a large client on your first time when there is a competition (even though I hope you do!).Prospecting Isn’t About TodayProspecting isn’t designed to produce results today. The effect it produces doesn’t show up until some time in the future. When you decide not to prospect, you push the work of creating opportunities into the future, and in doing so, you push the acquisition of new clients even further into the future.I am more than fond of the idea of Year Negative One. When you are prospecting and nurturing your dream clients now, you don’t believe that they are going to change for three years. Year Negative One precedes Year Zero, the year in which the client starts to recognize some need to explore change. Year One is the year in which you compete for their business. You start Year Negative One when you commit to pursuing your dream client in earnest, building and sustaining a long term campaign to win their business.The idea isn’t that it is going to take three years to win business from a major account, even though it very well may take that long or longer. It’s a recognition that some small population of large clients is going to change in any given year and that you need to work to be in front of that decision, doing the work to be known and preferred.Perpetual MotionProspecting needs to be continuous and unceasing. The same is true for nurturing relationships and capturing mindshare. The more proactive and disciplined you are about this work, the more you are immune to the adverse events that occur in sales, including the loss of a significant client. Given a long enough timeline, you will lose your large accounts. Thankfully, that truth applies in equal measure to your competition. The only way to protect yourself for the inevitable loss of a large client is to have a pipeline full of potential replacements.last_img read more

The Government will be spending $1.33 billion to implement the National Identification System (NIDS) in the 2019/2020 fiscal year.The allocation has been set aside in the 2019/20 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.The money will be used to commence piloting of NIDS with public-sector employees and continue the recruitment of key NIDS staff for the Project Enforcement Unit (PEU), in the Office of the Prime Minister.It will also go towards the continuation of the NIDS communication campaign; completing the digitisation of the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) records; and procuring hardware and software to establish necessary hosting and enrolment sites.Up to December 2018 under the project, key NIDS staff had been recruited for the PEU; and a NIDS Public Engagement Portal had been developed and launched.In addition, NIDS hosting, production and enrolment sites had been identified and workstations approved; and the National Identification and Registration Bill was approved and the Regulations developed.The project, which is being implemented by the Office of the Prime Minister, seeks to establish a unique identification number for individuals and develop a secure, efficient and reliable database of all Jamaican citizens.It is being funded by the Government of Jamaica and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
