CFPB proposes Oct. 3 as TRID effective date

first_imgThe Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced Wednesday it is proposing to delay the effective date of the Know Before You Owe integrated mortgage disclosure rule until Oct. 3, a Saturday, instead of Oct. 1.The bureau originally had proposed an Aug. 1 effective date of the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) integrated disclosures (TRID) rule.CUNA, while welcoming the delay, indicated it would continue to strongly advocate for a safe harbor period through Dec. 31 to protect credit unions and other financial institutions from liability under enforcement of the new rule as they acclimate to the new TRID requirements. The rule requires updated forms that lay out the terms of a mortgage for the borrower. In announcing the changed date, CFPB said an administrative error would have delayed the original Aug. 1 effective date to Aug. 15 at the earliest. Then the bureau said it would extend the date to October. continue reading » ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Fine allegations : Boeheim, SU’s lawyers file paperwork to dismiss defamation lawsuit

first_img Facebook Twitter Google+ Jim Boeheim‘s lawyers argue his statements toward two of Bernie Fine’s accusers are constitutionally protected opinions – not defamatory statements.Boeheim and Syracuse University’s attorneys filed court papers in Onondaga County on Tuesday stating the SU men’s basketball coach’s affinity for sarcasm, hyperbole and rhetoric are reasons to dismiss the lawsuit against him, according to an article published by The Post-Standard on Tuesday. The papers referenced past courts that have held that such expressions of opinion are protected by state and federal constitutions and should not be the subject of a defamation suit.Former ball boys Bobby Davis and Mike Lang both claim Boeheim defamed them when he publicly accused the stepbrothers of lying when they accused Fine, former associate men’s basketball coach, of molestation.Boeheim apologized for the comments 10 days afterward.Gloria Allred, the attorney representing Davis and Lang, said in an email she had no comment on the recent filing by the defendants’ attorneys.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textBoeheim and SU’s lawyers are scheduled to appear in court on April 27 before state Supreme Court Justice Brian DeJoseph, who will decide if the lawsuit will be dismissed, according to the article.New York courts have policed the line separating fact from opinion, often defining opinion broadly, lawyers wrote, according to the article. They cited cases where courts ruled calling someone a ‘pathological liar or a dirty liar’ were ‘appropriately labeled hyperbole and opinion.’ Lawyers wrote such a principle is more prevalent in Boeheim’s case, as he was denying allegations that were in part made against him.Boeheim’s lawyers additionally submitted a 28-page motion to dismiss the case Feb. 8, which stated former ball boys Davis and Lang filed needless complaints against Boeheim.Fine has denied the allegations against him and has not been charged. My brother-in-law introduced me to Christian Atsu – Kwesi Appiah

first_imgFormer head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, James Kwesi Appiah has revealed his brother-in-law recommended Christian Atsu for a Black Stars call-up.Christian Atsu Twasam made his Black Stars debut in Ghana’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.Ghana won the game 7-0 and the young protégé scored on his debut for his country. After the game, the 28-year-old Newcastle player was described by BBC as an “excellent prospect” and was tipped by many to reach the apex in his career and subsequently help the Black Stars lift yet another African Cup of Nations trophy. In an interview with Godfred Akoto Boafo on Citi TV’s Face To Face which airs every Tuesday at 9 pm, Kwesi Appiah disclosed he gave Christian Atsu the chance to prove himself with the senior football national team after a recommendation from his brother-in-law.“Personally if after a conversation and you suggest a player to me, I don’t forget about it. I follow up. I have a data software and then key in the name of the player and look at the last five games of the player. So if the player is as good as you say, I will consider giving that player a call-up.For Atsu, it was my brother-in-law who said, there is a player, I have seen him play and he is doing very well. So I checked and I gave him that opportunity.I think that’s what other coaches don’t do. They don’t give people the chance to prove themselves. “last_img read more
